From a Methodist vision to a $1 million campus rebirth
In short: The University of Puget Sound began as a moral crusade in 1888, struggling so deeply for funds it moved three times in just 13 years. It survived a merger and a total identity shift to become a stable liberal arts pillar in Tacoma.
Founded in 1888 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, the institution was born from the vision of Charles Henry Fowler, a former president of Northwestern University. The school was initially established as The Puget Sound University, but its early years were defined by financial instability. With no endowment, the school struggled to pay professors and moved locations three times within its first 13 years of existence.
The school underwent a dramatic transformation in the early 20th century. Under President Edward H. Todd (1913–1942), the institution launched the 'Million Dollar Campaign,' successfully raising $1,022,723. This capital allowed the campus to move to its current residential North End location in 1924. During this era, the school was renamed the College of Puget Sound in 1914, before eventually reclaiming its 'University' title in 1960.
A major shift in identity occurred in 1980 when the institution divested from the Methodist Church, establishing an independent board of trustees. Today, the university maintains a small-school feel with 1,594 undergraduate students and a 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio. It remains a unique independent liberal arts college in the Pacific Northwest, offering a specific mix of undergraduate degrees and five graduate programs in fields like public health and occupational therapy.
Current data from the College Scorecard highlights the school's accessibility and outcomes. The typical yearly earnings for graduates are approximately $59,684, which significantly exceeds the national average for high school graduates ($36,082). Furthermore, the university maintains a 72% acceptance rate, balancing academic rigor with a commitment to a diverse student body.
