How a Barbadian fast-medium bowler became a cornerstone of West Indies cricket history
In short: Vanburn Holder was more than just a supporting act for legends like Wes Hall. From winning the 1975 Cricket World Cup to navigating the disruptive era of World Series Cricket, his career spanned the evolution of modern cricket, eventually leading him to a significant new role on the pitch.
Born on 10 October 1945, Vanburn Alonzo Holder emerged as a vital fast-medium bowler for the West Indies. His international career, spanning from 1969 to 1979, saw him feature in 40 Test matches and 12 One Day Internationals. He was a key component of the squad that secured the 1975 Cricket World Cup victory and played a crucial role in the 1973 tour of England, helping the team end a 6½-year streak without a Test series win. He debuted during the 1969 tour of England. This period marked a turning point for the team's performance.
Holder's individual brilliance was often highlighted by standout performances, such as his 6 for 39 against India in 1974–75, which contributed to a series victory. His career also required resilience; during the 1977–78 period, when leading players were participating in World Series Cricket, Holder remained a fixture in the side, notably taking 6 for 28 against Australia in Trinidad. He also played for the Orange Free State in South Africa. This showcased his versatility across different cricketing environments.
Beyond his playing days, Holder transitioned into officiating. In 1992, he began officiating as a first-class English umpire, a role he maintained until retiring in 2010. By November 2020, he became the ECB's latest non-white umpire to be selected. His deep ties to English cricket were highlighted when Worcestershire County Cricket Club named him an honorary vice president in 2021, the same side he represented during their 1974 Championship victory. He also represented Shropshire in nine matches during 1981. This stint included taking 45 wickets.
After his professional playing career concluded, Holder settled in Worcestershire, where he continues to reside. He previously played club cricket for West Bromwich Dartmouth. This was during his time in the county circuit.
