A war fought for Ragnite in a world of moving paintings
In short: Set on the fictional continent of Europa, the Valkyria Chronicles series reimagines the tensions of World War II. Using a unique graphics engine to create visuals resembling pencil-drawn paintings, the saga follows soldiers fighting over Ragnite, a vital resource that has replaced petroleum in this tactical military epic.
The series, created by Ryutaro Nonaka and Shuntaro Tanaka, is centered on the Second Europan War. This conflict pits the democratic Atlantic Federation against the imperialistic East Europan Imperial Alliance. At the heart of the struggle is the neutral nation of Gallia, which is invaded by the Empire due to its abundance of Ragnite ore. The conflict is driven by the Empire's desire to seize Gallia's natural resources. This struggle is depicted through the exploits of different military units across various fronts.
The gameplay utilizes a turn-based system known as BLiTZ (Battle of Live Tactical Zones). While the first game debuted on the PlayStation 3 in 2008, the franchise has expanded across various platforms, including the PlayStation Portable, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows. The fourth installment, released in 2018, was notable for being the first in the series to debut on both Nintendo and Microsoft platforms in the West. While the initial entry launched on the PlayStation 3, subsequent titles moved to handheld systems like the PlayStation Portable. Later entries eventually reached platforms such as the Xbox One and Stadia.
Beyond the main tactical games, the franchise has expanded into diverse media. This includes four manga adaptations based on the first game and an anime series produced by A-1 Pictures. The third game's anime adaptation even featured research into the realistic consequences of combat, such as the mechanics of overturned or damaged tanks. The franchise's storytelling extends to various manga series and even a browser-based mobile game. Additionally, the anime adaptation was directed by Yasutaka Yamamoto and featured music by Hitoshi Sakimoto.
