From a bank clerk to a multi-billion dollar global conglomerate owner
In short: Vincent Tan’s rise is a masterclass in pivots. After his father's business failed, he moved from banking and insurance into high-stakes real estate and gaming. Today, he oversees a massive portfolio ranging from Malaysian telecommunications to European football clubs.
Tan's career began with a significant shift in trajectory. Originally intending to study law in New Zealand, the failure of his father's business forced him into a role as a bank clerk. He eventually transitioned into life insurance sales before launching private ventures in trading, credit, and real estate. A pivotal moment came in 1981 when he secured a McDonald's franchise in Malaysia, leading to his role as managing director of the brand in 1982.
His expansion into Berjaya Corporation was marked by strategic acquisitions and political ties. In 1985, Tan purchased a 51% stake in Sports Toto from the Malaysian government, a move that saw pre-tax profits soar from RM 5 million to RM 36 million within four years. By 1988, he orchestrated a complex swap involving Raleigh Bhd—a loss-making company linked to finance minister Daim Zainuddin—to establish Berjaya as his holding company. The company's earnings before tax soared from RM 700,000 during 1984 to RM 70 million by 1989 while he was in charge.
Tan’s influence eventually extended into international sports and philanthropy. He became a prominent owner of Cardiff City in 2010, navigating controversial rebranding efforts and high-profile managerial changes. His portfolio also includes stakes in Bosnian club FK Sarajevo and Belgian team KV Kortrijk. Beyond business, Tan is recognized for his philanthropy; he pledged to donate half his fortune to social causes and has donated millions to organizations like Mercy Malaysia and Tzu Chi Malaysia.
