How a baseball player became a stadium-wide folklore phenomenon
In short: When Kansas City Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino reached base, a figure in a Bigfoot costume would walk across the stadium roof. What began as a surprising team stunt evolved into a cultural movement involving custom sandwiches, gold jewelry, and a legendary nickname.
The phenomenon known as "Pasquatch" began as an unannounced tradition by the Kansas City Royals. To celebrate Pasquantino's success, the team began having an employee in a Sasquatch costume traverse the roof of the team's Hall of Fame in left field whenever he reached base. The player himself was unaware of the stunt until a friend shared a clip of the event on social media. The player's journey to this stardom began in Midlothian, Virginia, where he attended James River High School. He later developed his skills at Old Dominion University before being drafted by the Royals in the 11th round in 2019.
The branding quickly expanded beyond the stadium roof. Pasquantino embraced the persona, sporting a gold Sasquatch necklace, while the Royals introduced themed giveaways like small figurines. The connection even reached the stadium's food offerings; with Pasquantino's direct input, the team launched the "Pasqwich"—an Italian beef sandwich featuring bacon, hash brown patties, and provolone cheese—at a dedicated food cart named "Pasquantino's." This culinary innovation, which featured a brioche bun and giardiniera aioli, remained a staple through the 2025 season. The popularity of the brand even extended to various promotional items for fans.
Despite the playful branding, Pasquantino's career has been marked by significant physical resilience. He has navigated several major injuries, including a torn right labrum in 2023, a broken right thumb in 2024, and a right hamate bone fracture in 2026. Despite facing such struggles, he reached landmark feats, including tying a club record by homering in five straight games during 2025, and leading Italy as captain to become the inaugural player to smash three home runs in one World Baseball Classic match. His international impact was equally profound, as he captained the Italian national team to a perfect 4-0 record in the 2026 World Baseball Classic pool play. This performance helped Italy secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
