In short: Vishnu Vishal's path to stardom wasn't a straight line. A career-ending leg injury forced him into a period of isolation, where he traded his cricket gear for film study. This pivot transformed a sports enthusiast into one of the most versatile actors in modern Indian cinema.

Vishnu Vishal (born 17 July 1984) transitioned from professional athletics to acting after a significant physical setback. While playing in TNCA league games, a leg injury left him bedridden. During this recovery period, he began watching films intensely, sparking an interest in the industry that was further influenced by his uncle, who worked as a bit actor in Hindi cinema during the early 1990s.

His debut in 2009 with Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu required extreme physical commitment. To portray a kabaddi player convincingly, Vishal spent months tanning his skin under the sun and underwent three months of rigorous training for five hours a day. This dedication earned him a Vijay Awards nomination for Best Debut Actor. He later demonstrated versatility by gaining 15 kg (33 lb) to play a mature rowdy in the film Drohi.

Vishal's career is marked by significant commercial and critical milestones, including the psychological thriller Ratsasan in 2018 and the sports drama Gatta Kusthi in 2022. Beyond acting, he expanded into production with Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran in 2016, which became one of his most profitable ventures. His filmography also includes diverse roles, such as playing a Muslim character in the controversial film FIR (2022), which faced bans in several Middle Eastern countries.

His personal life has been equally high-profile. After marrying Rajini Natraj in 2010 and later divorcing in 2018, he married badminton player Jwala Gutta in 2021. His recent work continues to bridge genres, from the action thriller Aaryan (2025) to the wrestling comedy sequel Gatta Kusthi 2 (2026).
