From Paleolithic tools to Eskimo masks: a journey through human history

What In The World 6 (ca. 1952) · 29:26 · Video: Penn Museum · Watch at the source

In short: This 1952 film, a British version of BBC's 'Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral', explores diverse artifacts from the Penn Museum collection, spanning millions of years of human and natural history.

Hosted by Dr. Froelich Rainey and Dr. Alfred Kidder, the film examines a wide array of cultural and prehistoric objects. It features a finger mask used by Eskimo women dancers in Bering Strait, Alaska, during the late 19th Century, and a sheath for a headhunters axe from the Southern Sangtam Nagas in Assam, N.E. India.

The collection also reaches back to the Paleolithic Era with an elephant foot bone used as an anvil found in England, dating to 40,000 BC. Other featured items include a 150 million-year-old fish-like reptile vertebrae found in Yorkshire, England, and a bamboo toy pop gun from Uganda dated to the 1920s.
