Medieval castles were bustling hubs of commerce, not just silent fortresses

In short: While we often imagine castles as cold, lonely stone monuments, they were actually vibrant centers of rural life. Beyond their walls, they functioned as economic engines, providing essential services like grain milling and local administration, while inside, they hummed with the noise of hundreds of inhabitants.

Castles served as the primary administrative and economic hubs for rural communities. A lord did not just reside there; he administered the local economy, conducted courts, and provided vital infrastructure such as grain milling. This dual role as a fortress and a civic center meant that the castle was the heartbeat of the surrounding region, asserting the ruler's authority over the land and its people.

The social structure inside a castle was complex and densely populated. A large English castle could house a household staff of at least 50 people, including cooks, maids, and servants. While the Lord and Lady occupied private apartments—sometimes in a 'castle within a castle' for extra security—the rest of the inhabitants lived in a state of constant bustle. Soldiers, for instance, often slept in communal dormitories, and the Great Hall served as the primary social and administrative centerpiece for the entire household.

Daily life was defined by a strict hierarchy of labor and consumption. The distinction between the rich and poor was most visible in their diet, specifically regarding meat. While the common folk struggled, the nobility enjoyed a vast array of fresh, salted, or smoked meats, including poultry, wild birds like pheasants, and even more adventurous fare like herons and larks. However, this luxury was often precarious; during long sieges, such as the one at Kenilworth Castle in 1266, the hierarchy collapsed as defenders were forced to eat horses, dogs, and even their own leather belts to survive.
