How a Pixiv hobbyist's manga became a massive otaku phenomenon
In short: What starts as a niche hobby on an online community can transform into a global sensation. Fujita's Wotakoi began as a simple web manga on Pixiv, but it eventually captured millions of readers by exploring the relatable, often hidden, romantic lives of dedicated fans.
The journey of Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku began on April 17, 2014, when the author, Fujita, first posted the series on the Japanese artist community Pixiv. Its immense popularity on the platform led to its selection for Comic Pool, a digital magazine collaboration between Ichijinsha and Pixiv. By November 6, 2015, the series moved into regular serialization, marking its transition from a rookie's passion project to a professional mainstay.
The narrative follows Narumi Momose, an office worker who hides her interests as a fujoshi and otaku, and her childhood friend Hirotaka Nifuji, a capable professional who is openly a gaming enthusiast. Their struggle to balance their intense hobbies with professional and social expectations resonated deeply with audiences. This connection drove the series to massive commercial success; by July 2017, the manga had reached 4.2 million copies in print, and by August 2020, circulation exceeded 10 million copies.
The franchise's reach extended far beyond the printed page. A-1 Pictures produced an 11-episode anime adaptation that aired between April and June 2018 on Fuji TV's Noitamina block. The popularity of the characters was further cemented by a live-action film released in February 2020, which topped the Japanese box office during its opening weekend with over 389,000 tickets sold. From its origins as a digital upload to its status as a multi-media powerhouse, the series remains a landmark in modern web manga history.
