Yagan, the Nyoongar warrior who resisted British colonization of the Swan River region
In short: Born around 1795, Yagan became a legendary leader of the Nyoongar people during the British settlement of Western Australia. When colonial expansion threatened his people's survival, he led a fierce resistance that ultimately cost him his life, his head, and a century of rest in a foreign land.
In 1829, the British government established the Swan River Colony on land that had sustained the Nyoongar people for over 45,000 years. Despite this deep history, the British declared the region terra nullius, or land belonging to no one. As colonists cleared land for farms and erected fences, they destroyed the native plants and animals the Nyoongar relied upon for food. This disruption of traditional life forced the Nyoongar to hunt livestock and raid crops, sparking rising tensions in the early 1830s.
Yagan, the son of a respected elder named Midgegooroo, emerged as a central figure in the resistance. Following the killing of a Nyoongar man for taking potatoes in 1831, Yagan and his father retaliated by attacking a settler's servant. The conflict escalated throughout 1832 and 1833, with Yagan being declared an outlaw. He was briefly captured and imprisoned on Carnac Island but escaped, continuing to lead raids until he was killed on July 11, 1833, by a settler named William Keats, who sought a government reward.
Following his death, Yagan’s head was severed and sent to England, a common practice for defeated Aboriginal warriors at the time. It was displayed in the Liverpool Museum before being buried in an unmarked grave in 1964. After decades of requests from the Nyoongar community, the remains were finally repatriated to Australia in 1997. On July 10, 2010, Yagan was honored with a traditional reburial ceremony at Yagan Memorial Park, near the city of Perth, finally returning the warrior to his ancestral Country.
