In short: Zhang Jue, a mystic who claimed to heal the sick with blessed water, ignited the Yellow Turban Rebellion in 184 CE. By promising immunity to his followers, he challenged the Han dynasty’s mandate of heaven, leaving a legacy that persists in modern gaming and historical lore.

Zhang Jue, also known as Zhang Jiao, was a religious leader who rose to prominence during the late Eastern Han dynasty. He founded the Way of the Great Peace, a Taoist movement that gained massive popularity by offering healing through talismans and blessed water. This rise occurred against a backdrop of severe social instability, including famine, flooding, and recurring disease outbreaks, which some scholars theorize were linked to the Antonine Plague spreading along the Silk Road.

By 184 CE, Zhang Jue and his brothers—Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang—had organized their followers into a formidable force. They adopted the title of 'Great Teacher' for Zhang Jue and assigned themselves celestial ranks, declaring that the 'blue heaven' of the Han was failing and would be replaced by a 'yellow heaven.' Their rebellion was a direct response to perceived corruption, oppressive taxation, and the influence of tyrannical eunuchs within the imperial court.

The movement’s military campaign began in March 184 CE, but despite early successes, the rebels failed to capture the capital. Zhang Jue died from illness in October 184 CE, and his brothers were killed shortly thereafter by imperial forces. While the rebellion was eventually suppressed, the movement’s influence lingered; many survivors joined the warlord Cao Cao, whose agrarian reforms mirrored Zhang Jue’s original vision.

Centuries later, Zhang Jue’s story was immortalized in the 14th-century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which depicts him as a sorcerer gifted with a heavenly book of magic. Today, he remains a recurring figure in popular culture, appearing as a boss or playable character in titles like Total War: Three Kingdoms, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, and Fate/Grand Order, cementing his status as one of history's most enduring revolutionaries.
