Zenobia the Warrior Queen of the Palmyrene Empire · 8:59 · Video: World History Encyclopedia · Watch at the source

In short: Zenobia was a formidable queen who transformed the oasis city of Palmyra into the heart of a breakaway empire. This video examines her rise to power and the geopolitical instability that allowed her to challenge Roman authority during a period of imperial collapse.

Born in 240 CE, Julia Aurelia Zenobia rose to prominence alongside her husband, Lucius Septimus Odaenathus. As governor of the Roman East, Odaenathus wielded significant autonomy, effectively ruling his territory as an independent power. Following the assassination of both her husband and his son by a nephew, Zenobia became the power behind the throne for her young son, Vaballathus.

The Palmyrene Empire emerged during the Crisis of the Third Century, leveraging the strategic location of Palmyra as a vital Silk Road trading hub. While the empire lasted only three years, it represented a significant challenge to Roman hegemony until the Emperor Aurelian intervened to dismantle it.
