Capturing the shifting landscapes of nomadic life in Mongolia

Zanaa Jurmed, Mongolia (2000) · 56:05 · Video: Penn Museum · Watch at the source

In short: Step into the summer of 2000 to witness an ethnographic archive of Mongolian life, documenting the traditions and personal histories of people living on the steppes.

This footage, captured by Dr. Paula L.W. Sabloff, cameraman Tom Gillern, and crew member Heather Marshall, was filmed to support the Penn Museum's 2001 exhibition, 'Modern Mongolia, Reclaiming Genghis Khan'. The unedited tapes provide an overview of contemporary lifestyles through extensive interviews and scenes of life on the Mongolian steppes. The collection also includes personal glimpses into history, such as Zanaa's photos from a 1990 hunger strike.
