Bridging the gap between economic theory and the real world
In short: Why do complex financial phenomena like the Carry Trade often defy standard economic models? Professor Jagjit Chadha explores the friction between academic theory and practical reality, dissecting the macroeconomic puzzles that challenge our fundamental understanding of global finance and policy.
In his lectures as the Gresham Professor of Commerce, Professor Jagjit Chadda examines the disconnect between economic theory and practice. His work focuses on dissecting real-world phenomena, such as the Equity Premium and the Carry Trade, to determine what essential elements might be missing from current theoretical frameworks. By analyzing these puzzles, he seeks to refine our understanding of how global markets actually function. His lecture series specifically targets these discrepancies to see if our current models require fundamental improvements. He aims to identify exactly where the theory fails to capture the nuances of market behavior.
A specialist in macroeconomics and monetary issues, Professor Chadha brings a wealth of institutional experience to the discussion. He has served as an academic adviser to the Bank of England and HM Treasury, and has held roles including the Chair in Money and Banking at the University of Kent since 2007. His research also extends to the intersection of macroeconomics, capitalism, and inequality, where he explores the necessity of coordinating monetary, financial, and fiscal policies. Beyond his work in Kent, he also serves as a Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge. He also leads the Money, Macro and Finance Research Group.
These academic inquiries are part of a much longer tradition of public engagement. Today, this mission continues through a digital archive of over 1,800 lectures, allowing anyone to explore the structural economic options and cyclical challenges facing the UK and the wider world. The college currently hosts roughly five public lectures every week. Most of these sessions are available for free download via the institution's website.
