In short: Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf was a foundational figure in early Islam, rising from a penniless refugee to one of the wealthiest men in Medina. Known for his legendary business acumen and generosity, he played a pivotal role in political successions, including the selection of the third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan.

Born around 581, Abd al-Rahman was among the first eight men to embrace Islam. His journey was marked by significant hardship, including an early emigration to Abyssinia to escape persecution in Mecca. After moving to Medina, he transformed his financial status from poverty to immense prosperity. His business success was rooted in trade, particularly in clarified cheese and butter, and bolstered by land grants from Muhammad. His wealth eventually grew to include a vast stable of 100 horses, 1,000 camels, and 10,000 sheep.

Beyond his commercial success, Abd al-Rahman was a central political actor. He participated in every military operation led by Muhammad, including the Battle of Badr and the Battle of Uhud. His influence extended into the administrative life of the early caliphate, where he helped oversee the distribution of war spoils and contributed to the covenant regarding Jerusalem. In 644, he served on the six-member Council of Shura tasked by the dying Caliph Umar with selecting a successor, ultimately casting the deciding vote for Uthman ibn Affan.

Abd al-Rahman was famously generous, often donating massive portions of his wealth to charity and military efforts. Anecdotes suggest he once gifted an entire caravan of 700 camels to the poor after hearing a prophecy about his entry into Paradise. Despite his immense fortune, he maintained a reputation for humility and piety. He died in 653-654 at age 72, leaving behind a legacy as a successful entrepreneur and a trusted companion of the Prophet, remembered by Sunnis as one of the ten promised Paradise.
