How a dancing artist turned a ceramic collapse into a bridge between two worlds

AFPR—Meet The Artists: Andile Dyalvane · 4:34 · Video: The Met · Watch at the source

In short: Ceramicist Andile Dyalvane creates vessels that connect his South African upbringing with his global experiences. This video explores how a moment of physical movement in the studio transformed a simple pot into a landscape-inspired masterpiece, revealing the deep, energetic link between his past and his present.

Born in the village of Ngobozana in South Africa's Eastern Cape, Andile Dyalvane draws on his roots as a farmer and herder to inform his work. During an artist residency in Cornwall, England, he created a vessel titled 'Umwonyo,' which translates to 'crevice' in Xhosa. The piece was intended to capture the mountainous terrain of both his home village and his temporary English surroundings.

The final form of the pot was dictated by a serendipitous accident: while Dyalvane was dancing in his studio, the vessel collapsed. Rather than discarding it, he embraced the resulting craggy ridges and dips, which ultimately served to distill the essence of both landscapes into a single, unified work of art.
