How a peasant leader tried to turn Bulgaria into a republic and failed
In short: Aleksandar Stamboliyski rose from a farming village to lead Bulgaria, championing the rural majority against urban elites and the monarchy. His radical vision for a peasant-led state and a Balkan federation challenged the status quo, but his uncompromising policies ultimately invited a brutal military coup that ended his life.
Born in 1879, Stamboliyski emerged as the voice of the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union, a movement representing the four-fifths of the population who worked the land. His political trajectory was defined by a fierce anti-monarchist stance and a deep-seated opposition to Bulgaria joining the Central Powers during the First World War. In 1915, his direct confrontation with King Ferdinand over the nation's wartime alliances resulted in a life sentence, though he was released in 1918 as the monarchy faced collapse.
Upon becoming prime minister in 1919, Stamboliyski implemented a reformist agenda that prioritized the peasantry through land redistribution. His government maintained a distinct anti-industrial bias and utilized the Orange Guard, a paramilitary force, to suppress political opposition. Internationally, he sought to stabilize Bulgaria by fulfilling the terms of the Treaty of Neuilly and attempting to foster a 'Green International' of peasant movements across Europe, alongside a vision for a South Slav federation to replace narrow national identities.
Despite winning a landslide election in 1923, Stamboliyski’s tenure was marked by increasing friction with the military and the urban middle class. His efforts to improve relations with Yugoslavia and his advocacy for a militia alienated the armed forces. On June 9, 1923, a military coup successfully ousted his government. Stamboliyski was captured near his birthplace of Slavovitsa and executed, marking a violent end to his attempt to reshape Bulgaria into an agrarian republic.
