In short: Born into the high-stakes world of Renaissance aristocracy, Aloysius Gonzaga abandoned his inheritance and military destiny to join the Jesuits. His life was defined by a stark contrast: a childhood spent in royal courts followed by a final, fatal act of service nursing plague victims in the streets of Rome.

Born in 1568 in Castiglione delle Stiviere, Aloysius was the eldest son of Ferrante Gonzaga, a marchese who expected his heir to pursue a military career. From age four, Aloysius was trained in the art of arms, eventually serving as a page at the royal court of Madrid. Despite this trajectory, he felt a profound calling to religious life, a decision that sparked intense conflict with his father. In 1585, he formally renounced his inheritance and social status to enter the Society of Jesus in Rome.

His time as a Jesuit was marked by rigorous asceticism and ongoing health struggles, which had plagued him since childhood. Under the guidance of the theologian Robert Bellarmine, Aloysius prepared for ordination. However, his path shifted dramatically in 1591 when a plague epidemic struck Rome. He volunteered to work in a Jesuit-run hospital, where he carried the dying from the streets, washed them, and provided care. Though he privately admitted to Bellarmine that the sights and smells of the hospital revolted him, he persisted in his duties until he contracted the disease himself.

Aloysius died on June 21, 1591, at the age of 23, before he could be ordained. His legacy was cemented over the following centuries: he was canonized in 1726 and later named a patron saint of youth. In 1991, marking the 400th anniversary of his death, Pope John Paul II designated him a patron of AIDS patients and their caregivers, bridging the gap between his historical service during a plague and the modern medical crisis.
