Can physical artifacts reveal the evolving meaning of American freedom across two centuries?
In short: Secretary Bunch explores the American Aspirations exhibition, examining iconic objects that trace the nation's pursuit of its founding ideals. From the desk used to draft the Declaration of Independence to Amelia Earhart's flight suit, these items offer a tangible look at how generations have interpreted liberty and opportunity.
The exhibition brings together over 30 significant objects to commemorate the nearly 250-year history of the United States. By focusing on items like Abraham Lincoln's campaign materials, Thomas Edison's light bulb, and a miniature Statue of Liberty, the display invites viewers to reflect on how the ideals established in 1776 have been continuously reinterpreted.
This project is part of the Smithsonian's Our Shared Future: 250 initiative, which marks the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary. The exhibition received support from Jacqueline B. Mars, with additional funding from the Lilly Endowment Inc., Target, and the Gates Foundation.
