How variations in light and radio waves carry our digital world
In short: When you send a text or a pulse of light through fiber, you aren't just sending data; you are manipulating the very strength of a wave. Amplitude-shift keying allows us to encode complex binary patterns simply by turning power up or down.
Amplitude-shift keying (ASK) is a technique of amplitude modulation where digital data is represented by varying the amplitude of a carrier wave. In its simplest form, known as on-off keying (OOK), the system acts like a switch: a binary 1 is indicated by the presence of a wave, while a binary 0 is indicated by its absence. This specific method is still used at radio frequencies to transmit Morse code via continuous wave operation.
Beyond simple binary switches, more sophisticated encoding schemes use multiple amplitude levels to increase data density. For example, a four-level scheme can represent two bits per symbol, while an eight-level scheme can carry three bits. However, these advanced methods come with a trade-off: they require a high signal-to-noise ratio because much of the signal is transmitted at reduced power, making them more vulnerable to interference.
The technology is also vital for optical communications. In LED transmitters, a binary 1 is a short pulse of light and a 0 is the absence of light. Laser transmitters often use a fixed 'bias' current, where a low light level represents 0 and a higher amplitude represents 1. Despite its utility, ASK is sensitive to atmospheric noise, distortions, and propagation conditions. To prevent errors, engineers must manage intersymbol interference and noise, often using filters that satisfy the Nyquist ISI criterion to ensure the transmission is affected only by noise.
