Nairy Baghramian transforms The Met's facade with abstract, flotsam-inspired sculptures

An Evening with Nairy Baghramian I MetSpeaks · 40:55 · Video: The Met · Watch at the source

In short: Artist Nairy Baghramian discusses her first public installation in New York City, Scratching the Back. This conversation explores the creation of four polychrome sculptures designed to inhabit the niches of The Met Fifth Avenue.

Born in Iran in 1971, Baghramian moved to Berlin in 1984, where she remains based. Her work often examines the interplay between the human body, gender, and the tension between private and public spaces. For this commission, she created abstract forms that appear as if they have drifted into the museum's architecture like debris.

The installation, titled Scratching the Back, is part of The Facade Commission at The Met. The project is supported by the Marian Goodman Gallery and kurimanzutto.
