In short: Anne Golon created the global phenomenon of the Angélique novels, a series that captivated millions and inspired iconic cinema. Yet, despite this massive commercial success, the author spent her later years fighting a decade-long legal battle against her own publisher just to reclaim ownership of her life's work.

Born Simone Changeux in 1921, the author displayed a precocious talent for writing, publishing her first novel at age 18. Her life was defined by adventure, including a wartime bicycle journey across France to Spain and a stint as a journalist in Africa. It was there in 1947 that she met Vsevolod Sergeïvich Goloubinoff, a man known as Serge, who would become her husband and collaborator. Together, they crafted the Angélique series, blending her narrative skill with his deep historical research.

The 1956 debut, Angélique: Marquise of the Angels, was an immediate sensation. The series grew to include numerous installments, eventually inspiring five feature films in the 1960s starring Michèle Mercier and Robert Hossein. While the books were credited to both spouses in France, British publishers later consolidated their identities into the singular pen name Sergeanne Golon, a moniker that became synonymous with the series for English-speaking readers.

The trajectory of Golon's career shifted dramatically in 1972 when Serge died while the couple was in Canada researching a new volume. Left to raise four children alone, Golon continued to write, producing four more books between 1972 and 1985. However, by the 1990s, she found herself in dire financial straits. She initiated a lawsuit against her publisher, Hachette, alleging copyright abuse and unpaid royalties. The grueling legal struggle concluded in 2006, finally restoring her status as the sole owner of the series before her death in 2017.
