In short: While fire poles are iconic symbols of firefighting in fiction and films like Ghostbusters, they have also served a practical purpose in real-world stations. This video examines their history and their current uncertain future as fire departments weigh their continued use.
Fire poles have historically provided firefighters with a way to save valuable seconds when responding to emergencies. Despite their long-standing presence in fire stations, these devices are currently in a state of flux.
It remains unclear whether fire departments will continue to maintain these poles or if they will eventually be phased out entirely.
