The Army Dentist Who Held Off 98 Soldiers Alone

Badass Week: That Time an Army Dentist Killed 98 Attacking Enemy Soldiers Single-Handedly · 6:24 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: On July 7, 1944, Captain Ben L. Salomon performed a feat of endurance that defied military logic. This video explores how a single officer delayed an overwhelming Japanese force to save his comrades.

While World War II reached its peak, Captain Ben L. Salomon from the U.S. 105th Infantry of the Army had to defend a spot against intense Japanese assaults. Despite being commissioned as a dentist rather than a frontline combatant, Salomon stood his ground for 15 hours. His actions provided enough time for roughly 30 of his fellow soldiers to retreat safely.

When relief finally reached the scene, Salomon was found dead at a machine gun, surrounded by 98 deceased enemy soldiers. Although his heroism was undeniable, it took 57 years for him to be awarded the Medal of Honor because of a technical misinterpretation regarding the rules of war.
