How to reconstruct a journey from nothing but its changing speed
In short: If you know how fast you were moving at every single moment, can you figure out exactly how far you traveled? Calculus provides the answer through integration—a process of gathering tiny fragments of information to rebuild a complete picture of motion.
Calculus is fundamentally built on the relationship between two types of functions: height and slope. While the first half of calculus focuses on finding the slope (the derivative) from a known height, integration reverses this logic. It asks: if we only know the slope at every point, how do we recover the original height? This is essentially the mathematical way of reconstructing a total distance when the speed is constantly fluctuating.
Professor Gilbert Strang explains this by conceptualizing the integral as an additive process. Imagine a trip where your speed changes every second; to find the total distance, you must 'add up' those infinitesimal pieces of movement. While finding a derivative involves taking a small distance across and a small distance up to see how they relate at a specific point, integration gathers all those individual results to determine the overall change.
There are elegant shortcuts for certain functions, such as power functions. For example, if you know that a height function of x to the n-th power produces a slope where the exponent drops by one, you can work backward. To find a height that results in a specific slope like x to the n-th power, you must identify an original function involving x to the n+1 power and then divide by that new exponent. This ensures that when the derivative is taken, the terms cancel out perfectly to leave you with your target slope.
