In short: For decades, the world believed Bob Kane was the sole creator of Batman. In reality, Bill Finger was the architect of the character's iconic look, secret identity, and detective persona. While Kane amassed fame and wealth, Finger remained an uncredited ghostwriter until a long-overdue campaign finally restored his legacy.

Bill Finger joined Bob Kane’s studio in 1938, shortly after the two met at a party. When Kane conceived a character named 'Bat-Man'—originally a Superman-like figure in red tights with stiff wings—it was Finger who suggested the cowl, the cape, the gloves, and the gray color scheme. Finger also devised the name Bruce Wayne, drawing inspiration from Robert Bruce and 'Mad Anthony' Wayne, and transformed the character from a simple vigilante into a scientific detective. His contributions extended to the entire mythos, including the creation of Gotham City, the Joker, and the Penguin.

Despite his pivotal role, Finger was trapped by a 1939 contract that guaranteed Kane a sole byline on all Batman properties. While Kane privately admitted in the 1980s that Finger was responsible for up to 75% of the character's creativity, he publicly maintained that Finger was merely a subcontractor. Consequently, Finger died in 1974 in relative anonymity, suffering from occlusive coronary atherosclerosis. His death went largely unreported, and for years, it was mistakenly believed he had been buried in an unmarked potter's field.

The tide began to turn in the 2000s through the research of biographer Marc Tyler Nobleman and the advocacy of the comics fan community. These efforts eventually reached Finger's granddaughter, Athena, who led a campaign to secure his recognition. In 2015, DC Entertainment finally agreed to credit Finger as a co-creator on film and television projects. This shift was formalized in October 2015, when his name appeared on comic books for the first time, marking the end of a decades-long struggle to acknowledge the man who truly defined the Dark Knight.
