The end of the middleman: how technology is disrupting financial gatekeepers

Bypassing Banks Using Tech · 59:21 · Video: Gresham College · Watch at the source

In short: For millennia, banks and brokers have thrived by controlling a single, precious resource: information. But a new era of decentralized platforms is challenging this monopoly. From the telegraph to artificial intelligence, we are witnessing a fundamental shift in how capital finds its way to those who need it.

Financial intermediaries, such as banks, brokers, and mutual funds, have served as the essential link between investors and firms for thousands of years. Their power stems from their ability to manage information scarcity. However, Professor Raghavendra Rau of the University of Cambridge notes that these traditional institutions face three specific hurdles: imperfect information, asymmetric information—where one party knows more than the other—and the inherent behavioral biases of human decision-makers.

Historically, technological leaps have redefined these information boundaries. Before the mid-19th century, communication relied on inefficient methods like the Pony Express, railroads, and even homing pigeons. The arrival of Samuel Morse’s telegraph in 1838 changed everything by drastically lowering costs and centralizing market data. A striking example of this impact occurred in the grain markets; in 1846, corn and wheat prices in Buffalo were trailing New York City prices by four days. By 1848, telegraphic links allowed these markets to synchronize prices almost instantly.

As technology progressed, the landscape of exchange shifted. While hundreds of regional exchanges emerged and faded throughout the 19th century, only a few major hubs like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco maintained lasting dominance. This concentration is still visible today, as five of the twelve Federal Reserve banks are located in these historic cities. Today, the competition has moved from physical wires to digital frontiers. The current technological revolution—driven by cryptography, big data, and artificial intelligence—is creating decentralized platforms that allow us to bypass centralized intermediaries entirely.
