Can machines ever be conscious, or are they just predicting the next word?
In short: As AI models like ChatGPT and Claude demonstrate human-level reasoning, a profound question remains: are they actually experiencing anything? While these machines can write poetry and solve complex math, they may simply be mimicking the unconscious processing found in the human brain.
The debate over machine consciousness was first raised by Alan Turing seventy years ago. Today, we are in the Age of Intelligent Machines, where large language models can explain, joke, and even propose scientific hypotheses. These models are trained on a deceptively simple task: predicting the next word or token in a sequence. By adjusting internal connections—sometimes up to a thousand billion—to best anticipate the next item, they emulate the synaptic junctions of the human brain without necessarily "understanding" prose in a human sense.
To understand if machines can be conscious, researchers suggest we must distinguish between different types of brain computations. One type involves selecting information for global broadcasting to make it available for report, while another involves self-monitoring that leads to a subjective sense of certainty. Current deep-learning networks primarily implement computations that reflect unconscious processing in the human brain, rather than the conscious operations that define our own subjective experience.
While these artificial neural networks are inspired by neurobiology—utilizing layers with converging projections and modifiable synaptic weights—they do not mimic the biophysical properties of actual brains. The rapid progress in AI has significantly eclipsed the slower advances in neurotechnology. As machines approach or surpass human performance in specific tasks, the scientific community continues to grapple with whether these digital architectures will ever bridge the gap from sophisticated simulation to true, subjective awareness.
