Could you legally drop your surname to become mononymous?
In short: Most modern infrastructure is designed for people with at least two names. But if you wanted to shed your surname and live with only a single given name, is there a legal barrier in your way? The answer is more flexible than you might expect, provided you follow a few essential rules.
In contemporary Western society, the standard naming convention is duonymous—consisting of a first name and a surname. This structure is so deeply embedded in our social and administrative infrastructure that people with only a singular given name often face significant friction. While mononymous people were once the global norm, they are now a rarity in the modern West.
Surprisingly, you do not always need a government official to validate a name change. Despite what many assume, individuals have always been able to alter their names without formal registration with any government agency. In the UK, for instance, anyone over the age of 16 is legally permitted to start using a new name at any time, provided the intention is not fraudulent or illegal.
The methods for making these changes official have evolved significantly over the centuries. During the 18th and 19th centuries, individuals often relied on private Acts of Parliament or royal licences to change their names. By the 20th century, these methods were largely superseded by the use of a deed poll. Historically, people often changed names discreetly; for example, some individuals adopted a partner's name during difficult divorce proceedings to ensure their children appeared legitimate.
However, legal restrictions have existed for specific groups. Between 1916 and 1971, foreigners living in Britain faced strict limitations. In 1916, 'enemy aliens' were forbidden from changing their names, and this ban was extended to all foreigners in Britain in 1919, remaining in place until 1971.
