In short: Founded in 1611 by a wealthy merchant, Charterhouse School evolved from a London hospital into a prestigious boarding school. Beyond its academic reputation, the institution played a pivotal role in shaping the rules of modern association football, championing the passing game that defines the sport today.

Thomas Sutton, a man who built a fortune through coal discoveries near Newcastle upon Tyne, founded the London Charterhouse in 1611. His will established a hospital for eighty male pensioners and a school for forty boys. By the 19th century, the school was identified by the Clarendon Commission as one of the original nine major English public schools, leading to its regulation under the Public Schools Act 1868. In 1872, headmaster William Haig Brown oversaw the school's relocation to a 68-acre site in Godalming, Surrey.

The school's influence extends far beyond the classroom into the history of sport. During the 1840s, pupils confined to playing in narrow cloisters found the rough handling games popular at other schools impossible. This necessity forced the development of a new code of rules. When the Football Association was formed in 1863, Charterhouse and Westminster School representatives successfully pushed for a passing game, opposing the dribbling-focused style preferred by schools like Eton and Harrow. By 1867, the FA adopted the "loose" off-side rule championed by Charterhouse, which permitted forward passing and effectively birthed the modern game.

Today, the school maintains a distinct identity through its unique vocabulary, known as Lingua Carthusiana, and its fifteen boarding houses. While it has achieved academic success—with over 50% of pupils earning A* or A grades at GCSE in 2024—it has also navigated significant controversies. These include a 2005 price-fixing scandal involving fifty independent schools and various allegations of misconduct and harassment reported by former pupils. Despite these challenges, the school remains a prominent institution, its campus frequently serving as a filming location for high-profile dramas like The Crown.
