The Stoic philosopher who spent his nights carrying water to pay for his education.

In short: Cleanthes was a former boxer who arrived in Athens with only four drachmae. To fund his studies under Zeno, he worked as a night-time water-carrier. His endurance earned him the nickname the Ass, a title he embraced for its implication that his back was strong enough to bear any burden.

Born in Assos around 330 BC, Cleanthes transitioned from a career in the boxing ring to the rigorous intellectual life of the Stoic school. His commitment to philosophy was so profound that he was once summoned before the Areopagus to explain his lack of visible income. The judges were so impressed by the evidence of his manual labor that they offered him ten minae, though his teacher Zeno forbade him from accepting the gift.

Upon Zeno's death in 262 BC, Cleanthes assumed leadership of the Stoic school, a position he held for 32 years. He was instrumental in shaping Stoic physics, introducing the theory of tension, or tonos, which argued that matter is not inert but animated by a vital force. He also expanded the Stoic goal of life, adding the crucial phrase "with nature" to Zeno's original directive to "live consistently," emphasizing that humans should align their will with the rational order of the universe.

His philosophical legacy is defined by a rigorous materialism; he argued that the soul itself is a material substance, evidenced by the transmission of mental traits from parent to child and the physical sympathy between body and mind. Cleanthes lived to the age of 99, passing away around 230 BC. When a severe ulcer necessitated a period of fasting, he chose to continue his abstinence until death, reasoning that he had already traveled halfway down that road and saw no reason to turn back.
