The true definition of cynicism is a judgment of how things ought to be
In short: We often define cynicism as seeing the world for what it truly is. But what if that's a lie? According to Michael Mamas, true cynicism isn't about realism; it is a rigid, suffocating judgment that imposes a personal rulebook onto the fluid beauty of human nature.
Michael Mamas argues that the common definition of a cynic—someone who sees things as they are—is actually upside-down. To truly see things as they are requires an ability to perceive the 'divinity,' 'beauty,' and 'elegance' in the human dynamic. Realism, in this view, involves recognizing the pulse of group consciousness and accepting the inherent nature of people without the need to intervene or judge. It is the ability to observe a situation and conclude that while change might be possible, it may not be the appropriate time or place to act.
True cynicism, Mamas suggests, is a 'judgment orientation.' It occurs when we look at people and insist they 'ought' to be a certain way. This perspective treats life as a static rulebook rather than a dynamic, fluid process. When we constrain our lives and others by these rigid expectations, we become 'tortured souls.' Mamas uses the analogy of an overprotective mother dog who nibbles the toes and tails off her puppies; this represents the way we 'nibble' away at the reality of others to fit our own cynical notions of how the world should function.
To move past this, one must achieve a sense of freedom. According to Mamas, individuals who perpetually follow internal scripts regarding how actions ought to occur experience a stifled life. By letting go of these prescriptive rules—while still maintaining basic guidelines like 'don't kill'—one can finally feel the pulse of humanity. This shift allows for a more authentic engagement with the world, where we see people for their actual nature rather than our projections of their duty.
