Is the entire universe just a massive, complex flow of digital information?
In short: Physicist Vlatko Vedral argues that reality is fundamentally information-based. This lecture explores how quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and DNA all share a common digital language, potentially bridging the gap between the subatomic quantum world and our everyday macro reality.
Vlatko Vedral posits that the universe operates through the ebb and flow of data, viewing physical existence as transient patterns of information. This perspective links the four-letter digital code of DNA to the broader laws of thermodynamics and entropy. The lecture examines quantum entanglement—Einstein's 'spooky action at a distance'—and how these bizarre phenomena might influence the macro world, rather than remaining confined to the smallest scales.
Vedral, a Professor of Quantum Information Science at the University of Oxford since 2009, also discusses the development of hyperfast quantum computers. With over 500 published papers, he provides a framework for understanding how quantum information theory shapes our grasp of the cosmos, building on his extensive research in quantum cryptography and thermodynamics.
