Why the iconic horned Viking helmet is actually a historical myth

Did Vikings Really Wear Horned Helmets? · 3:00 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: We all picture Viking raiders charging into battle wearing massive, horned helmets. However, there is no archaeological evidence that these warriors ever wore such impractical headgear. The myth is a much later invention, rooted in Bronze Age artifacts that predated the Viking Age by nearly two millennia.

The image of the horned Viking is a product of popular culture rather than historical reality. While many depictions show warriors with horns, archaeologists have found no evidence that Vikings actually used such equipment. In fact, such headgear would have been highly impractical for actual combat. The confusion stems from the discovery of horned helmets in Viksø, Denmark, which were mistakenly associated with the Vikings for many years.

Recent research has corrected this misconception. By applying radiocarbon dating to birch tar located on a horn, researchers established that the Viksø helmets belong to roughly 900 B.C.E. This places them in the Nordic Bronze Age, nearly 2,000 years before Viking society even began to develop in the 9th century C.E. These ancient artifacts appear to be part of a much broader cultural exchange involving the Mediterranean and the Near East.

The horned motif is likely linked to divine rulership and warfare in the ancient Near East and eastern Mediterranean. Evidence suggests that Phoenician travelers may have brought these ideas to Europe. This cultural movement coincided with the trade of copper and tin, as Scandinavia lacked its own metal resources at the time. While some archaeologists, like Nicola Ialongo of Georg August University of Göttingen, remain skeptical of these new findings, the connection suggests that ideas and materials traveled together along the Atlantic coast.

The legend of the horned Viking likely took root in the 1800s, when Scandinavian artists began popularizing these specific portrayals in their creative works.
