How twelve musical postcards evolved into a monumental celebration of resilience and triumph.
In short: Composer Matthew Evan Taylor spent 2021 creating short collaborative pieces for The Met. These works eventually merged into Life Returns, an evening-length performance blending jazz, classical, and South Asian traditions. This video captures the digital premiere of that powerful, genre-defying work.
Commissioned by MetLiveArts, Taylor developed twelve individual pieces titled Postcards to The Met throughout 2021. Working remotely, he collaborated with the Metropolis Ensemble and the South Asian jazz collective RAJAS to explore African-American, South Asian, and Western European musical traditions.
These fragments grew into Life Returns, a cohesive work that balances free improvisation with structured composition. The piece serves as a meditation on overcoming despair, reflecting the resilience of the artists during the pandemic. The work was recorded during its world premiere on March 24, 2022, at The Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium.
