Why do some molecules stick together more strongly than others?
In short: This video explains dipole-dipole forces, the attractive interactions between polar molecules. Understanding these forces is essential for predicting how molecules behave and interact based on their polarity, size, and mass.
Dipole-dipole forces arise specifically between molecules that possess permanent dipoles, known as polar molecules. When comparing molecules of similar mass and size, the intensity of these forces scales directly with the degree of polarity present in the molecules.
Beyond these permanent interactions, polar molecules can also influence nonpolar ones. By inducing a dipole in a nonpolar molecule, they create what are known as dipole-induced dipole forces, expanding the range of electrostatic interactions in chemical systems.
