The monk who traded his habit for the Enlightenment and modernized a nation
In short: Dositej Obradović was a polyglot monk who abandoned his monastery to traverse Europe, absorbing the rationalist ideas of the Enlightenment. He returned to Serbia not just as a philosopher and linguist, but as the nation's first minister of education, fundamentally reshaping its cultural identity and introducing potato cultivation.
Born Dimitrije Obradović in 1739, he entered the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Hopovo in 1757, adopting the name Dositej. Despite his religious life, he was driven by a relentless hunger for knowledge. By 1760, he left the monastery to pursue a life of travel and study, eventually mastering numerous languages including Greek, Latin, German, English, and French. His intellectual journey led him to the University of Halle in 1782 and later to Leipzig, where he immersed himself in the philosophical traditions of the German Enlightenment.
Obradović was deeply influenced by English rationalism, viewing England as a beacon of spiritual freedom. His commitment to modernization was practical as well as intellectual; he introduced potato cultivation to help the Serbian populace combat famine. As a writer, he pioneered biographical collections in Serbian, modeling his work after classical figures like Plutarch and Suetonius. His influence on the development of modern Serbian literature was so profound that he and his protégé, Vuk Karadžić, are recognized as its founding fathers.
In 1807, he moved to Belgrade to serve as the first minister of education under Karađorđe Petrović during the First Serbian Uprising. He founded the Velika škola in 1809, the institution that would eventually evolve into the University of Belgrade. Even his poetry served his political vision; his work 'Rise O Serbia' famously depicted the nation as a sleeping beauty, urging it to awaken and lead its neighbors. When he died in 1811, he left behind a legacy that bridged the gap between traditional monastic life and the modern, rationalist future of the Serbian state.
