How a California novelist turned a $2 million advance into a literary career
In short: Emma Cline arrived on the literary scene with a record-breaking deal and a debut novel that captivated the public. Yet, her rise was marked by more than just commercial success; it involved navigating high-stakes legal battles, critical acclaim for her sharp prose, and a distinct focus on gender dynamics.
Born in 1989 in Sonoma County, California, Emma Cline’s path to literary prominence began early. After graduating from Sonoma Academy at 16, she pursued art at Middlebury College before earning an MFA from Columbia University in 2013. Her short fiction quickly gained traction, earning her the Plimpton Prize from The Paris Review for her story "Marion."
Cline’s debut novel, The Girls, published in 2016, became a cultural phenomenon. Random House secured the rights after a competitive bidding war involving 11 other publishers, offering a $2 million advance. The book, which draws inspiration from the Charles Manson cult of the 1960s, spent a quarter of a year on The New York Times Best Seller list and won the 2016 Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novel. Despite praise for her descriptive style, some critics questioned the necessity of the cult backdrop.
Her career has not been without turbulence. In 2017, she faced plagiarism allegations from a former partner, Chaz Reetz-Laiolo, who claimed she used spyware to access his work. Cline countersued, citing abuse. In 2018, Judge William Orrick dismissed the claims with prejudice, noting that the works in question differed significantly in texture and detail. Since then, Cline has continued to build her reputation with the 2020 story collection Daddy and her 2023 national bestseller, The Guest, which explores themes of social displacement.
Beyond her own writing, Cline has expanded into publishing as a co-founder of Picture Books, an imprint of Gagosian Gallery. Alongside Peter Mendelsund, she has curated works by notable authors like Ottessa Moshfegh and Percival Everett. Her trajectory—from a young writer in California to a celebrated, albeit occasionally controversial, voice in American literature—highlights the complex intersection of artistic ambition, industry expectations, and the scrutiny that accompanies sudden, high-profile success.
