The invisible architects of life that make metabolism possible

In short: Without a specific class of biological catalysts, your body would effectively freeze in time. Chemical reactions necessary for life would occur so slowly they would be imperceptible. Enzymes allow these vital processes to happen at high speeds without the enzymes themselves being consumed or altered.

Enzymes are essential regulators of cell metabolism, facilitating every chemical reaction required to sustain living organisms. Their primary role is to lower the activation energy required for reactions to occur. This allows for critical functions such as the digestion of large nutrient molecules—like proteins, carbohydrates, and fats—into smaller components, the construction of cellular macromolecules from precursors, and the transformation of chemical energy.

The mechanism of these catalysts relies on specific interactions between enzymes and their substrates. Enzymes possess active sites where substrates bind; this process often involves an 'induced fit' to facilitate the reaction. While they are primary drivers of life, a deficiency in even a single enzyme can lead to inherited human diseases, such as phenylketonuria or albinism.

Historically, humans utilized enzymes for millennia in food production—such as leavening bread, fermenting wine, and brewing beer—before the catalytic nature of these reactions was scientifically understood in the 19th century. Today, they are used extensively in industrial processes involving organic chemistry, medicine to kill pathogens or promote wound healing, and even in cheese making via the protease enzyme chymosin.

While enzymes were long believed to be exclusively proteins made of polypeptide chains, this axiom was refuted in the 1980s. Scientists discovered ribozymes, which are catalytic nucleic acids (RNAs). However, because the specific functioning of RNA enzymes is still not fully understood, most biological discussion remains focused on protein-based catalysts.
