The constellations you recognize today are temporary arrangements in a shifting cosmic landscape.

Everything in the Universe is Moving–Including the Constellations · 6:18 · Video: American Museum of Natural History · Watch at the source

In short: The universe has been in constant motion since the Big Bang, meaning our Sun and the stars themselves are always traveling. This video explores how this movement will eventually transform familiar constellations like Scorpius and Taurus over millions of years.

Since the Big Bang, the universe has been defined by a superfast expansion from an infinitely dense point. This initial event set everything in motion, from the Earth orbiting the Sun to the Sun circling the Milky Way galaxy. Because nothing in space stands still, our perspective on the stars is constantly evolving.

Using data visualization software called OpenSpace, curator Jackie Faherty demonstrates how our changing position within the galaxy will reshape the night sky. The video features visuals from the Hayden Planetarium’s Space Show, Encounters in the Milky Way, to illustrate that the patterns we see today are merely fleeting configurations.
