The shift from renting fleets to renting your neighbor's driveway

Excuse me, may I rent your car? - Robin Chase · 12:25 · Video: TED-Ed · Watch at the source

In short: Robin Chase changed American driving by introducing non-ownership through Zipcar. Now, she is evolving this model with Buzzcar, a French startup. Instead of using a central fleet, this new peer-to-peer approach allows neighbors to rent out their personal vehicles, turning unused car capacity into a way to earn money.

In 2000, Robin Chase applied her MIT business training to a concept imported from Europe, co-founding Zipcar in the United States. The model was designed to introduce 'car-crazy' America to the idea of non-ownership, utilizing technology like wireless keys, location awareness, and internet billing to allow members to access vehicles at various locations whenever needed. Today, Zipcar stands as the largest car-sharing company in the world. Before her success in the industry, Chase could easily be mistaken for a dedicated civil servant or a specialist in refining computer models for freeway traffic. Her approach was deeply rooted in her academic background and a green-conscious mindset.

However, Chase is now exploring a different evolution of the sharing economy through Buzzcar, a startup based in France. While Zipcar relies on a centralized fleet of vehicles, Buzzcar operates on a peer-to-peer model. This allows individuals to rent out their own cars to others, essentially allowing users to generate income from their vehicle's unused capacity.

This transition represents a broader vision Chase calls 'Peers, Inc.' The concept extends beyond mere transportation to a new definition of entrepreneurship and ownership. Through the 'Peers Pledge,' the vision encompasses sharing not just automobiles, but also homes, skills, and time. It shifts the focus from a company-managed service to a decentralized network of neighbors sharing resources directly with one another.
