Why your brain struggles to grasp the power of doubling

Exponential growth: How folding paper can get you to the Moon · 3:49 · Video: TED-Ed · Watch at the source

In short: Humans are naturally linear thinkers, but the universe often operates on a nonlinear scale. This cognitive gap makes it nearly impossible for us to intuitively predict the staggering results of exponential growth, where small changes compound into massive, world-altering consequences in just a few steps.

Our brains are wired to process information linearly, where the difference between integers remains constant (1 + 1 = 2). However, many natural and mathematical processes are nonlinear. For example, our senses are actually logarithmic; our eyes perceive luminance and our ears perceive sound sensitivity on modified logarithmic scales to provide a wider range of experience. Because we struggle to visualize these scales, we often underestimate how quickly exponential growth can escalate.

The classic example of this is folding a piece of paper. Each fold doubles the thickness of the sheet. While the first few folds seem insignificant, the thickness increases by 2 to the power of the number of folds. By the 10th fold, a standard sheet becomes over 1,000 times thicker. By the 20th fold, it is over 1,000,000 times thicker—reaching a length of about 105 meters, which is longer than a football field.

This compounding effect reaches astronomical proportions rapidly. To reach the moon, which is an average of 384,000 kilometers away, you only need to fold a piece of paper 42 times. If you were to fold it just one fewer time, the thickness would only reach 220,000 kilometers. While physical constraints like crease curvature make this impossible in reality, the math illustrates a profound truth: in an exponential system, the difference between 'almost there' and 'beyond' can be just a single iteration.

While popular myths suggest paper can only be folded seven times, records show that a 1,200-meter-long sheet was folded 12 times in 2001. The limitation is not just the thickness, but the mathematical curvature of the fold, which eventually exceeds the available surface area.
