How conservators repair the illusion of sky in museum dioramas
In short: When background paintings peel away, the seamless illusion of space is lost. This video follows paintings conservator Harriet Irvng as she restores the integrity of historic museum displays.
In three dioramas, peeling paint caused visible bubbling that disrupted the intended sense of depth and sky. To fix this, Harriet Irgang smoothed and reattached the canvases to their supporting walls. The process concluded with delicate touch-ups using paints custom-mixed to match the original hues, ensuring the restoration remained invisible. This work was part of the restoration for the Hall of North American Mammals, which reopened in October 2012.
