In short: Between 1946 and 1964, Brazil underwent a radical transformation from a rural, agrarian society to an urban industrial power. This era, known as the Fourth Republic, was defined by a frantic push for progress, the birth of a new capital, and a complex dance with American interests.

Following World War II, Brazil entered the 'Populist Republic,' a period characterized by the return of democratic elections and a national obsession with development. The era was defined by a consensus among the elite to transition the nation into a modern, industrial state. This transition was marked by the founding of Brasília on April 21, 1960, and the presidency of Juscelino Kubitschek, who oversaw significant growth. However, this progress was shadowed by persistent political instability and deep divisions within the ruling class.

The geopolitical backdrop was the Cold War. Under the influence of modernization theory and the National Security Doctrine, the United States viewed Brazil as a key partner in countering communism. This led to hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. loans and a massive expansion of Brazilian industry. Yet, tensions existed; for instance, the 1949 creation of Petrobras—a state-owned petroleum corporation—irked American officials because it excluded them from a critical energy sector. Meanwhile, the Brazilian military closely aligned with U.S. interests, even establishing the Escola Superior de Guerra (War College) with American support to train officers.

The era's most dramatic moment occurred on August 24, 1954, when Getúlio Vargas, a dominant political figure who had returned to the presidency in 1951, committed suicide. His death transformed him into a popular martyr and fractured the political landscape. Despite the democratic veneer, the period was plagued by military pressure on civilian leaders. This tension eventually culminated on March 31, 1964, when the military staged a coup to end the Populist Republic, citing the need to preserve political order.
