In short: François de La Mothe Le Vayer was a tutor to Louis XIV and a pillar of the French court, yet he lived a double life. While he publicly served the monarchy, he privately championed radical skepticism, influenced Molière’s biting critiques of religious hypocrisy, and helped pioneer modern historical criticism.

Born in Paris in 1588, Le Vayer moved from a legal career at the parlement to the center of intellectual life. Admitted to the Académie française in 1639, he eventually became the tutor for Louis XIV and his brother. His pedagogical efforts yielded a seven-volume series on princely education, covering subjects from geography to logic, which earned him the roles of historiographer of France and councillor of state.

Beneath this conventional career lay a subversive mind. Le Vayer was a dedicated proponent of skepticism, famously elevating the ancient philosopher Sextus Empiricus to near-divine status. This intellectual stance was risky in Catholic France; his open embrace of such ideas likely prevented him from attaining higher state offices. He was also a key link in a profound intellectual lineage, having inherited the library of Marie de Gournay, which had originally belonged to Michel de Montaigne.

His influence extended into the arts through his close friendship with Molière. Scholars suggest that Le Vayer’s erudite, hidden disdain for religious hypocrisy fueled the iconoclastic satire found in plays like Tartuffe. In 1667, he anonymously defended the play against court religious factions, a text later cited by Michel Foucault in his analysis of governmentality. His own writings, including a 1668 treatise questioning historical certainty, helped establish the foundations of French historical criticism, proving that his most enduring legacy was not his service to the crown, but his challenge to established truths.
