How one Austrian cardinal broke 455 years of tradition to reshape the modern papacy
In short: Franz König was a diplomat, philosopher, and bridge-builder who navigated the Cold War with quiet resolve. By orchestrating the election of the first non-Italian pope in over four centuries, he fundamentally altered the trajectory of the Catholic Church and its relationship with the divided political landscape of the twentieth century.
Born in 1905, Franz König emerged as a pivotal figure in the twentieth-century Church. After earning doctorates in philosophy and theology in Rome, he developed a deep expertise in old Persian languages and religion. His academic background informed his later work as Archbishop of Vienna, where he balanced conservative and liberal viewpoints while navigating the complex, often hostile, political environment of post-war Austria.
König’s diplomatic influence was profound. He acted as a Vatican emissary to Communist nations, securing the release of imprisoned bishops and fostering dialogue across the Iron Curtain. His commitment to ecumenism and interfaith relations led him to establish Pro Oriente to bridge Catholic and Orthodox divides, and he famously initiated high-level meetings between Church leaders and Freemasonry. During the Second Vatican Council, he contributed significantly to the declaration on non-Christian religions, Nostra aetate.
His most enduring legacy, however, was his role in the 1978 conclave. With the papacy deadlocked between Italian candidates, König proposed an unorthodox alternative: the Polish archbishop Karol Wojtyła. This choice ended 455 years of Italian papal dominance. Though König later clashed with the Roman Curia over the centralization of power and the appointment of his successor, Hans Hermann Groër, his influence remained immense. He continued his work for peace as president of Pax Christi until his death in 2004 at age 98, leaving behind a vision of a Church that was both open to God and engaged with the world.
