In short: Often called the father of modern liberal theology, Friedrich Schleiermacher did more than reform Protestantism. He pioneered hermeneutics, transforming interpretation from a niche religious tool into a universal art. By arguing that we can understand an author better than they understood themselves, he fundamentally changed how we read the world.

Born in 1768, Friedrich Schleiermacher emerged from a strict Moravian upbringing to become a central figure in German Romanticism. His intellectual journey was defined by a rejection of orthodox Christianity in favor of a system where religion was not a collection of creeds, but a fundamental human experience. He famously defined religious feeling as a sense of absolute dependence on God, positioning this inner life as the true foundation of theology rather than scripture or rationalistic dogma.

Beyond his theological influence, Schleiermacher is celebrated as the father of modern hermeneutics. He argued that interpretation should not be limited to specific fields like law or biblical studies but should be a general theory of understanding. He proposed that a text is an external expression of an author's inner thoughts. To interpret it, one must employ both grammatical analysis—understanding the language—and psychological interpretation—connecting with the author's intentions and emotions. He believed that by analyzing an author's entire body of work, a reader could potentially grasp the author's meaning more clearly than the author did at the moment of creation.

Schleiermacher’s philosophical system was deeply ambitious, aiming to reconcile the dualism of the ego and the non-ego. He viewed human life as an interaction between these elements, where the goal is to find unity through thought and action. His work, including his massive lectures on ethics and his translation of Plato, sought to provide a complete view of human life. While he faced intense opposition from both rationalists and traditionalists during his life, his influence persisted, shaping twentieth-century thinkers like Heidegger and Gadamer, who expanded his textual theories into a broader interpretation of lived experience itself.
