In short: With 200 novels and 120 million copies sold, Gérard de Villiers built a literary empire on the edge of reality. His SAS series blended hard-core espionage with such uncanny geopolitical accuracy that his fiction often seemed to precede the actual news.

Gérard de Villiers, a French journalist and publisher, created one of the most enduring fiction series in history. Writing from 1964 until his death in 2013, he authored the SAS series, following the adventures of Malko Linge, an Austrian prince and CIA agent. The series title, 'SAS', stands for 'Son Altesse Sérénissime' (His Serene Highness). His work was noted for its intense blend of geopolitical insight, contemporary terrorist threats, and explicit content, earning him a global readership spanning from Japan to Russia.

The secret to his realism lay in his methodology and his network. A graduate of Sciences Po and the École supérieure de journalisme de Paris, de Villiers utilized his background as a foreign correspondent to ground his plots. He maintained connections with military and intelligence professionals who provided details on espionage tactics. His writing process was remarkably disciplined: he typically spent 15 days conducting on-location research in various theaters of operation, followed by a six-week writing period. Between 1966 and 2005, he maintained a rigorous output of four titles per year, later increasing this to five.

De Villiers gained a reputation for 'prophetic' writing. His novels occasionally mirrored real-world events with startling precision, such as portraying the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat before it occurred, or describing an attack on a Syrian government command center in his 2012 book, *Le Chemin de Damas*, just one month before the actual event. This knack for capturing the 'risk and cold calculation' of intelligence work made his series a subject of study for various intelligence services and a favorite of French heads of state.
