In short: Giorgi Margvelashvili was an unlikely political figure, rising from academia to become Georgia's fourth president. His tenure was marked by a constitutional shift that stripped his office of significant power, leading to a public falling out with his own party and a unique exit from the national stage.

Born in Tbilisi in 1969, Margvelashvili spent his early career as an academic, earning a doctorate in philosophy and twice serving as rector of the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs. He remained largely outside the political spotlight until 2012, when he joined the cabinet of billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili. His rapid ascent saw him named the Georgian Dream coalition's presidential candidate in 2013, a move that drew skepticism from outgoing president Mikheil Saakashvili, who famously compared the nomination to Caligula naming his horse to the senate.

Upon winning the 2013 election with 62% of the vote, Margvelashvili assumed office just as a new constitution took effect, significantly curtailing presidential authority in favor of the Prime Minister and Parliament. This structural change, combined with his independent streak, caused his relationship with the ruling Georgian Dream party to deteriorate. Throughout his term, he frequently clashed with party leadership over constitutional reforms, media pluralism, and the consolidation of power. He became the first president in Georgian history to decline a bid for a second term, leaving office in December 2018.

Since retiring from the presidency, Margvelashvili has pursued a life far removed from the political fray. He returned to lecturing at the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs and settled in the provincial town of Dusheti. There, he has embraced a modest lifestyle, even renting out a cottage to tourists to supplement his income. Despite this retreat, he has remained a vocal critic of the government, advocating for the release of political figures and eventually joining the Strong Georgia coalition in 2024 to oppose the ruling party.
