In short: Imagine a life where every desire is met by a stroke of impossible luck. For Gladstone Gander, this isn't a dream—it is a character trait that defies probability. But while his cousin Donald struggles against the world, Gladstone’s effortless success reveals a profound psychological trap: the inability to achieve anything meaningful.

Created by Carl Barks in 1948, Gladstone Gander is defined by a luck so absolute it borders on the supernatural. While Donald Duck is the avatar of misfortune, Gladstone is its polar opposite. His luck provides him with everything from finding lost valuables on a sidewalk to pieces of a torn treasure map miraculously reassembling in a river. This luck is so consistent that he often feels confused or believes it has abandoned him, only to realize it has been working in his favor all along.

The mechanics of his luck vary by region and era. In early stories, he was merely an arrogant braggart, but by 1949, his 'born lucky' status became his defining trait. Various authors have provided different origins: some cite a horoscope claiming he was born under a lucky star, others suggest the goddess Fortuna is in love with him, and Don Rosa noted he inherited his mother's luck in 1920. Regardless of the source, the result is the same: Gladstone is incapable of long-term planning or effort because he never has to exert himself to succeed.

This creates a stark contrast with his relative, Scrooge McDuck. While Scrooge is motivated by ambition and takes pride in building his fortune through hard work, Gladstone is a hedonist who views any form of labor as beneath him. He is so disconnected from reality that he considers the act of 'willfully wishing' to be hard work. This lack of agency makes him an unsympathetic figure to many; he is a man who wins by the letter of the law but loses the spirit of achievement, often resigning immediately when things go wrong, certain that a lucky wallet will appear around the next corner.
